Instant gratification

It was pleasure to have as a guest Christian. We found many interesting topics of discussion. But one issue which express very precise my own experience with life in America is “Instant gratification”. Lack of patience. I found several interesting links, like this.

Netbooks

Yesterday we stopped at Best Buy, and for awhile we were browsing what is there. We spent some time with netbooks. My son enjoyed ASUS, only $199. I was trying to explain to him, that he does not know Linux, and his schools PowerPoint presentation would not work there. But later I found there is Open Office, and it would be able open PPT file.

We tested also Acer ($299) and HP($399), both with cameras and Windows XP.

I found pretty soon should be on market netbooks with ARM processors.  There is interesting JVM technology Jazelle.

Brother HL-2070N Network Laser Printer

After expensive experience with ink jet printers I bought some time ago network printer Brother HL-2070N. It is ideal for home or home office printer sharing, the HL-2070N is an affordable monochrome laser printer. The HL-2070N also features a built-in Ethernet network interface. The first toner cartrige lasts only 999 pages, but my understanding is that all other toner cartriges TN350 should last  approx. 2,500 pages @ 5% coverage on Letter size paper. After printing several pages today it’s closer to cartrige change.

After decade daily translation of the Astronomy Picture of the Day I translated today text from English into Czech with help of CAT tool – Computer Aided Translation. It was actually more work, but it should pay off  in long run. I started build APOD translation memory.

Memory upgrade

Work on Toshiba Satellite A45 – S121 notebook can be very slow. So I did some research. The major reason probably is too small memory. It used to run OK, but latest antivirus software is occupying too much memory, and so virtual memory is paging a lot. In this moment there are two slots PC2100 SO-DIMM, each with 128MB, so notebook has total 256MB of physical memory. It would be nice to have at least 512MB (about $20), or maybe even 1GB ($40).There are several stores selling such memory card, like computermemoryoutlet.com.I am not sure if two different sizes of memory cards can be combined. Step by step procedure is described in online manual.

Science Fair

I had a privilege to participate in first year of the school Science Fair. Afternoon I helped to set tables, chairs, etc. in school gym. Evening I was one of the judges. It was interesting experience for me. Kids knew their experiments well, and they were able to describe it into the details. My son’s project was “The strength of a magnet”. I learned about many interesting projects. One of them was hovercraft, we have to do it in garage sometimes  in future.

Computer Aided Translation

So far I was translating with simple editor. But there are software tools for Computer Aided Translation, or Computer  Assisted Translation. There are free tools, like java based OmegaT or OmegaT+  and proprietary tools like IBM Translation Manager, Trados, or Soget.
